Help re-build the Herd
When Australians are down, we help them get up again, it’s the Aussie way. We call it mateship and we do it after fires, during drought and now…after floods.
In North West Queensland a large proportion of the cattle herd was wiped out during ten days of torrential rain! Hundreds of thousands of cattle died leaving our farmers, who had just endured eight years of drought, wondering whether they will ever recover. Many of these farmers won’t have an income for two years.
Rural Aid is launching a new campaign to help farmers rebuild their herds by asking Australian’s to help Buy a Cow. Similar to the hugely successful Buy a Bale campaign, this initiative will allow Australians to donate money which will be given to farmers to buy a few cattle and give them a much needed boost.
Rural Aid will allocate 100% of the funds raised to the purchase of new cattle. Farmers will be given up to $15000 each to assist in their restocking in addition to other grants Rural Aid is making towards bill payments, groceries and fodder assistance.
Rural Aid, through its Buy a Bale program, sourced and delivered almost 2,500 bales of emergency hay into NW Queensland immediately after the flood waters receded and is continuing to supply additional fodder as demand requires.
Over the last 6 months Rural Aid has spent over $13m supporting farmers in drought affected areas with fodder drops, water, financial assistance and mental health counselling services.
campaign brings together this emergent need for livestock support and a new push
to raise mental health awareness in the bush across all age spectrums with the
release of “Free Air”, a song penned by young musician Phoebe Jay and performed
with Tommy Emmanuel. Recently released, the song reminds us all that there is
hope and we should look to others in times of need, that it is ok to ask for
help. The mental health of our graziers in this NW Qld areas is of grave
concern to us and we’re working to provide all the assistance we can to help them
through these coming months with counsellors and regular contacts.
Spreading this message in these ongoing natural disasters is paramount and Rural Aid is standing with all rural communities now and into the future.
