Quick fact: Orroroo is home to Magnetic Hill, where cars appear to roll uphill when placed in neutral, although the strange effect is actually an optical illusion.
The seasons have not been easy for Orroroo. Dry conditions, uncertainty and ongoing drought pressure have affected farms, families and local businesses.
With support from Rural Aid’s Community Development program, the community came together to revitalise the main street. Shopfronts and verandahs were refreshed, creating a more welcoming streetscape and giving the community something positive to rally around.
Business owners and community members worked together to improve shopfronts, verandahs and surrounding areas.
The project created visible change while encouraging businesses to work together and invest in their shared town centre.
The community recognised that during difficult seasons, visible signs of progress matter.
A welcoming street gives people a reason to stop, creates a stronger first impression for visitors and gives residents something to feel proud of.
The transformation has created a visible lift in community pride and business confidence.
Visitors have noticed the difference, with tourists stopping at the Information Centre commenting on how beautiful the town looks.
For local businesses, every visitor who stops creates an opportunity for a coffee, a conversation or a purchase that supports a local family.
The community is continuing to look ahead, with plans for further improvements to footpaths and streetscapes.
