Farming, Floods, and Fighting Back: Rural Mental Health Support Builds Resilience

Tony Carusi, a farmer from Woodburn NSW, knows first-hand the toll that natural disasters can take on a community. His farm, which raises cattle and grows crops, has been hit hard by the devastating floods of recent years. Tony’s story is one of resilience, but also one of the significant support he and his fellow farmers have received from Rural Aid.

A District Devastated by Floods

The Lower and Mid Richmond River district in northern New South Wales has faced immense challenges over the past three years. The floods of 2022 were catastrophic, with water levels 2.4 to 2.7 metres higher than what was considered a ‘one in a 100-year’ flood event. The damage to equipment, crops, and infrastructure was severe, leaving farmers struggling with both immediate and long-term consequences.

Tony shared how Rural Aid’s support has made a huge difference during these trying times. “Rural Aid has given a lot of support… the hay and other items of support have been great and very greatly appreciated,” he said.

How Rural Aid Helps Farmers Rebuild

The recent hay drop in Tony’s area is just one example of how Rural Aid is assisting local farmers who’ve lost pasture due to flooding. After natural disasters, farmers face not only damage to crops but also the additional threat of pests, like army worms, which exacerbate the damage. Tony explains, “the hay that Rural Aid has been able to bring in and make available to farmers is very well received.”

This vital support helps ensure that cattle have food while pastures recover. It’s this kind of assistance that allows farmers to stay on their feet and continue their work.

Mental Health Support is Crucial

Beyond the physical challenges, the mental toll on farmers can be overwhelming. The stresses of dealing with floods, crop loss, and the need for constant repairs take a significant mental health toll.

Tony knows that many farmers are reluctant to ask for help, but he urges them to reach out when needed: “Farmers are often the last ones to put up their hands to help, but I’d encourage anybody to reach out to the Rural Aid mental health professionals for help.”

Rural Aid’s disaster assistance and mental health support services are a lifeline for many farmers who are struggling in silence. Tony’s message to those who have supported Rural Aid speaks volumes: “Do so please with confidence because you know that these people employ the right people, that communicate well with farmers and they are part of the rural community.”
