For many farmers, the daily grind of managing a property leaves little time to focus on anything beyond immediate needs. “You talk a lot about doing repair/rebuild projects after a natural disaster for a long time, you just never get to do them because you’re busy with the day-to-day of the farm.”
In 2019, amidst a crippling drought, a devastating fire tore through Nancy & Gary’s property, destroying fences and adding immense stress to an already overwhelming situation. “The impact of that was very intense, it took a huge toll. That was on top of the drought.”
Four years later, in October 2023, history repeated itself. Another fire ripped through the land, burning out fences and compounding the strain. “It all takes a huge toll mentally.”
With the farm’s future hanging in the balance and Nancy and Gary’s mental health at an all-time low, support from Rural Aid made all the difference.
“We wouldn’t have been able to continue if it weren’t for the help we received. Having help meant we could get the farm back up and running again to get us back on our feet. It was a game changer for us.”
